Soft cover. Condition: As New. No Jacket. 1st Edition. From its first appearance in 1903, The Murderess has been regarded as Papadiamandis's finest work. Set on his native island of Skiathos it tells the story of Hadoula, a widow with grown-up children, who has convinced herself that it is better little girls should leave this life when young so that they and their parents should not suffer the trials that inevitably would be inflicted on them by an inequitable society. In the throes of this misguided compassion she first murders her own granddaughter and afterwards finds herself set on a course she is unable to stop despite the promptings of her conscience and her awareness of the consequences. Translated by Liadain Sherrard and Introduced by Lambros Kamperidis. 140 pages, sewn pages. Front edge of cover very slightly scuffed from, it would seem, the binding process, otherwise the book is as brand new and unread.

Soft cover. Condition: New. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Around the Lagoon is one of Papadiamandis s most finely crafted and densely written stories. Unusually, it is written in the second person and addressed to a friend , who can be seen as the narrator s younger self. The narrator evokes his childhood experiences of unrequited love and betrayed friendship amid an idyllic natural setting. As is usual in his stories, Around the Lagoon combines a plot involving individual characters with descriptions of work, customs and manners practised by the whole community. Work plays a major role in this particular story, especially in the detailed and vivid descriptions of boat-building, the preparations leading up to the launch of a boat into the bay, and the launch itself with its associated traditional ceremony and the celebration which follows. This translation of 'Around the Lagoon' is a revised version of the translation which first appeared in Volume I of The Boundless Garden: Selected Short Stories by Alexandros Papadiamandis (2007). Peter Mackridge is Emeritus Professor of Modern Greek at the University of Oxford. 72 pages with six photographs.

Encuadernación de tapa blanda. Condition: Nuevo.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First English Edition (NAP). Both the book and the dust jacket are in excellent condition. Take a look at the photographs. The black covers of the book have very little wear, a little crinkling at the spine ends, a tiny dent on the front. The page edges absolutely clean. The interior of the book looks, dare I say, perfect. The pages are all very clean. I went through them and didn't see any soiling at all. They are in excellent condition. I didn't see any creasing or dogeared corners. No issues of any kind. There aren't any markings. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. I've had the dust jacket in a fitted protective cover as long as I've owned the book. The jacket is not clipped. The flaps are in very good condition. I really don't see much in the way of wear on the jacket, maybe a little toning at the margins, not much. There's a tiny bit of crinkling at the spine ends. That's pretty much it. From the front dust jacket flap: Written in 1903, The Murderess is a classic of modern Greek literature, a popular tragedy, audacious in conception and subtle in execution. It's heroine, ferocious in her womanhood, is reminiscent of Antigone and Hecuba , confronts 'woman's fate' with her own violent final solution.
