Racine, Wisconsin: Artists and Writers Guild, n.d. [ca 1935]. Original color-pictorial spiral-bound flexible card covers. First Artists & Writers edition (spiral-bound) of what many consider to be Maxfield Parrish's ultimate achievement in book form. The oversize (12" x 10") plates, in luminous color, are magnificent. This A&W edition is often described as having been published in 1925, because the book's only date, is where it reads "Copyright 1925 by Charles Scribner's Sons." However, this Artists and Writers edition was published a whole decade later -- in 1935-1936, and in Poughkeepsie not in Racine. The original (first) edition was indeed published by Scribner in 1925 -- a regular hardbound book. Western Printing Company of Racine Wisconsin had acquired Whitman Publishing in 1916, to issue inexpensive juvenile books; in the early 1930s, Western also acquired Artists and Writers Guild of Poughkeepsie, New York -- not a "guild" at all, but a printer then specializing in playing cards and greeting cards. 1935-1936 was the first year of children's book production for Artists and Writers Guild in Poughkeepsie, and their list for that first year consisted of 28 titles, including this one -- available both spiral-bound (as here) or with a regular card-cover binding. This copy is in very good-plus condition (lower fore-corner of the front cover creased, small scuff on the right-hand baker's sleeve).

Hardcover 1/8 Cloth, 7/8 Paper. 1st Edition. VG (book in very good condition) Folio (approx. 12 inches to 15 inches Cloth Binding SAUNDERS, Louise PARRISH, Maxfield Knave of Hearts With pictures by Maxfield Parrish New York Charles Scribners Sons 1925. [6], 46, [1], [3, blank] pp. Illustrated throughout with full color plate illustrations. Original black cloth with color pictorial label on front cover. Color pictorial endpapers. A tight square bright copy, overall a very good copy. "Not until 1920 did [Parrish] agree to illustrate what was to become one of the most valuable childrens books ever published, Louise Saunderss Knave of Hearts. Saunders was the wife of Maxwell Perkins, the editor of Scribners. They summered in Cornish, New Hampshire, and were friends with the Parrishes. In a letter to J.H. Chapin of Scribners, Parrish wrote on October 24, 1920: . Imagination could run riot, not bound down by the pe- riod, just good fun and all sorts of things. You must understand all this layout to be in gorgeous color. The landscapes back of the figures in the cover lininga very beauti- ful affair illuminated by a golden late afternoon sun: castles, water- fall, rocks and mountains. Parrish relished working three years on the twenty-six paintings for Knave of Hearts. He built an elaborate castle model in his fully equipped workroom to use in the illustrations for the book. Many of the fixtures in the illustrations show handcrafted items from the Parrish household, such as elaborate hinges and a wonderful clocklike affair.that Parrish had built to let him know when the main house ran out of well water.Knave of Hearts, published in October 1925, was printed in rich colors on heavy coated paper. The illustrations were the highest quality reproductions that could be printed" This copy has tiny restorations to pictorial label and to the gilt and black cloth. Superb Parrish, among his best, the problem is that most copies have gone the way of all flesh and breakers and are now rare whole, the cheaper spiral bound issue sells now for up to 1,000, this is a good minus copy, with loss to the front cover paste down, else a good plus, with an excellent set of plates, perfect for repair or a breaker, I prefer repair, a value copy. Size: Folio. Hard Cover.
