Noel-Paton. Floral illustrated end pages. Green coloured cloth covered boards with a lighter green coloured floral design to the lower half of the book; with gilt coloured embossed titles to the front panel and back strip. A novel about a family living in an ancestral house called Silverthorns. The book is definitely showing its age and use  please see photograph. Softening, rubbing and fraying of the back strip edges; to the book corners which also show the underlying board and there is rubbing to the lower book edges. There is a significant cock of the spine. Rubbing along the front edge of the front panel and to either side of the back strip and to the panels. Some marks to the panels. Tanning and some foxing to the text block edges with age toning and foxing of the pages. The front free end page is missing and the there is only remnants of the rear free end page. Offset tanning to the end pages with the aforementioned foxing. The hinge has cracked, with the underlying webbing visible, to some portions of the book. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Some shelf wear and bumping. Previous owner's details have been scratched off first pastedown. Endpapers split to webbing but all still bound. A fair to good copy. The book features the Ballad of The Dowie Dens o' Yarrow in text, with individual verses highlighted and illustrated with lovely fine engravings. Text pages are age toned with minor marks. The engravings have some foxing around the edges with the images themselves remaining clean and bright. Text in English/Scots. Unnumbered, but contains; 1pp title + 1pp Preface + 4pp the Ballad. Followed by 6 engravings on heavier stock, each preceded with a verse page and blank guard. Dimensions: Approx 436mm high x 308mm wide x 8mm deep. Weight: Approximately 810g (unpacked).
