Garden City, New York, Doubleday, Doran and Co.,Inc., 1937, stated First Edition, ix, 195pp., good decorated brown cloth, front hinge a bit wobbly, previous owner's name: Raymond Gilbert Jr. SIGNED simply "Elisabeth Peck" on title page beneath the printed name. No note is made of the illustrator of the many woodcut vignettes throughout the book. Consists of poems by the author, based on historical material in "old journals, pamphlets, letters, newspapers and wills. Most of the poems have a note giving the approximate date and region of the materials used." For example: "Ohio Valley, c. 1800" - or a 9-line note about ropewalks along the Ohio River as preface to the poem "The Rope-Spinner." The author wrote a 1911 dissertation at the University of Chicago entitled: "A study of the Greek priestess ]" (54pp.) under the name Elisabeth Holderman. She was later professor of history and political science at Berea College in Kentucky and author of the 1955 history of that college.
