Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. This is a unique volume of this publication. The black-and-white images are printed as part of the publication of the book. However ,most of the color images, including the nudes in brown tones, are laid in as if in a production phase of the book, e.g. they appear to be cut out and affixed in place with the identification information already printed. There is a statement, following page 286, that reads " 'Passage' will include a detailed illustrated chronology of Irving Penn's work life printed in full color, not included in this advance bound book. Additionally, while the title page is printed the verso side is blank and there is no copyright information included in this volume. The boards are covered in an oat colored cloth that is soiled and has somewhat faded black lettering on the spine. There is also some cloth missing on the spine just above the "I" in Irving. Internally, this volume is bright, clean and without marks or soiling.

Fine in Very Good dust jacket (1-inch closed tear at the top rear flap, moderate wear to the extremities, toning to the spine); missing slipcase. From Vince Aletti: "Irving Penn's first book, Moments Preserved, is an overview of an astonishingly busy career -- one that began in earnest when he was hired by Alexander Liberman in 1943 to be the art director's assistant at Vogue.Penn spent a month in Lucerne, Switzerland, overseeing the printers at C. J. Bucher, who had produced Avedon's Observations the previous year. For Moments Preserved, they worked with gravure, letterpress, and offset processes on separate paper stocks and had casts of Condé Nast's original engraving plates flown in from New York for the book's color reproductions. When the first gravures didn't have the requisite depth, those pages went back to press and another image layer was laid on top of the originals. The book's first edition print run of 20,000 was divided into French, Italian, German, and English editions.Subtitled Eight Essays in Photographs and Words, Moments Preserved gathers Penn's vast variety of enthusiasms -- mostly for the vast variety of humanity -- and slots them into categories by nationality: the French, the Italians, the English, the Americans. Though most of the sections include fashion studies, still lifes, and impressionist scenes.they have in common the photographer's deftly understated portraits, printed here in the subtlest gravure. Penn reinvented the classic daylight studio portrait for a more casual time, undercutting its formality but heightening its potential as a revealing performance.".

Fine in a fine near dust jacket. Slipcase is about fine condition. Includes the original brown paper covering from Simon and Schuster, which is worn. Roth 101, pp. 158-159; Hasselblad pp. 186-7. Irving Penn was an internationally known American photographer who became popular for his work in fashion photography. He worked at Vogue magazine, and he photographed for Issey Miayke and Clinique. His work serves as an example of excellent photography even today. Moments Preserved is his first publication. Irving Penn said befittingly of his work, "[s]ensitive people faced with the prospect of a camera portrait put on a face they think is one they would like to show the world. Very often what lies behind the facade is rare and more wonderful than the subject knows or dares to believe" His photography is held at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, both of which also hold collections of personal materials that relate to Penn's career.
