Pamphlet. Condition: Good. 16 p.: tables; 22 cm. Disbound. "Together with Extracts from the Report of the Minority of the Committee of the Massachusetts Legislature, Presenting Their Reasons for proposing a residence of two years after naturalization, instead of fourteen years in the United States, before Foreigners can acquire the right to vote and hold office." Edward Lillie Pierce (1829-1897) argued that foreign-born citizens should be permitted to vote after a shorter residence in the United States because the large number of German and Scandinavian immigrants in the western part of the country were likely to vote for Republicans and against slavery. He served with the 3rd Massachusetts Regiment during the Civil War before establishing schools for freedmen on the Sea Islands off South Carolina. In Good Condition: disbound; first leaf and last leaf are detached but present with loss along the gutter edges; title page and p. 16 are soiled; minor chipping along some edges; complete.
