About this Item: Secker, 1934. First edition. Cloth slightly soiled, spine faded and slightly torn at head, fore and tail edges spotted and dust-soiled. Scarce. A detective novel set in London Society. In the autumn of 1924, Waugh had developed an infatuation for Olivia Plunket-Greene and 'had in fact fallen in love with an entire family'. Waugh later described her brother, Richard, as 'piratical in appearance, sometimes wearing ear-rings, a good man in a boat, a heavy smoker of dark, strong tobacco, tinged, as were his siblings, with melancholy, but also infused with a succession of wild, obsessive enthusiasms. He brought to the purchase of a pipe or a necktie the concentration of a collector. During the next few years I saw him become a connoisseur of wine, a racing motorist, an exponent of the latest jazz, the author of a detective novel.' They also taught together at Alston Clinton; it was his example that had fortified Waugh to 'that desperate expedient'. Richard married Elizabeth Russell, who would become the dedicatee of Waugh's P.R.B. Seller Inventory # 2556
