Black Hardback. Condition: Very Good-. Dust Jacket Condition: Good Plus. First UK Edition. 1964. First UK edition. 287pp., a colour frontispiece and 54 black and white illustrations. Alois Podhajsky (1898-1973) was the director of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Austria as well as an Olympic medal-winner in dressage, riding instructor, and writer. He competed at the 1936 Summer Olympics and the 1948 Summer Olympics. He is probably best remembered for his involvement in the evacuation of the Lipizzaner horses from the Spanish Riding School in Vienna during World War II. This story of Podhajsky's life and career is seasoned with many personal anecdotes and his experienced views on riding. The book is bound in the original black boards with gold titling against and orange background on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the spine ends and slight cocking to the spine. There are some light dents on the top edge of the front board and some very faint water staining on the top 1 1/2" of the rear board. The contents are tight and clean with a light water stain on parts of the top and fore edges of the endpapers and first and last few pages, including the fropntispiece and title-page. The free endpapers have some light foxing and soiling and there is an inscription on the front free endpaper. The clipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and the top edges is rubbed with some water staining. The spine ends and corners are bumped and nicked with small pieces missing from the spine corners. The wrapper is in an easily removed clear plastic protective cover.
