Biography of the Rev.John Bennett Boddie (1880-1944), by his son, Charles Emerson Boddie (1911-1997), who had the distinction of being the first African American to become staff secretary of a national agency of the American Baptist Convention. Paperback. Condition: Good. First Edition. Abyssinian Baptist Church, 1949 (printed by Theo. Gaus' Sons, Inc.). No additional printings indicated. 21.5cm x 14cm; xv, 132pp. + four pages of photos. Blue paper wraps, glossy paper interior, sewn/glued binding. A history of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem that is "the best [the author] could do with the material. at hand and under the conditions with which it was recorded", according to Powell's preface. Bind is fully intact, though a little precarious between the first and second gatherings. Text, photos are clear and crisp with no interior markings. Silver title text on front wrap is clean and bold; moderate amount of shelfwear to edges of wraps, some light creasing to lower outer corners on both sides; light age-toning to wraps; small sticker ghost above title text box on front wrap. A very scarce book in good condition. From a private collection. Ships from Dinkytown in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The retired pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church, succeeded by his son Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., details his trip to the middle east in the book's first five chapters, and discusses the types of ministers - fundamentalist, modernists and progressives - and the importance of the social gospel which he himself espouses. Powell was an early leader of the NAACP and National Urban League, and he promoted the notion of an institutional church that offered social as well as spiritual services to the community.

Small pencil notation lists date as July 2, 1951. {In 1937, Powell retired as pastor and his son, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. replaced him on November 1. Adam Clayton Powell, Sr. died in New York City, on June 12, 1953 at the age of 88.} Newpaper article has browned and affected title-page, causing browning. In the books preface the author lists his two reasons for writing the present volume: to give readers a human [read unvarnished] picture of Palestine and to publicly raise a voice against the world's rising tide of anti-semitism. No previous ownerwship marks. Long pencil mark on front free end-paper. Some pages unopened from binder, other opened roughly with resulting minor closed tears. A clean, tight, square copy. Very good. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Tight and VG+ in a bright, VG- example of the fragile pictorial dustjacket, with chipping at the spine ends and very light creasing and chipping --with several small closed tears-- along the panel edges. Octavo, this book represents "a sincere effort to reform the church" by Adam Clayton Powell, Sr., the legendary pastor of Abyssian Baptist Church (1908-1937) and the father of firebrand New York Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. (the first African-American elected to Congress from New York).
