Map
Charles Preuss (illustrator). [John C. Fremont and Charles Preuss] Map of Oregon and Upper California--1848, Senate of the United States, 1848., Washington City. Lithography by E. Weber & Co, Baltimore. 35.25 x 28.25 inches. One of the classic and important maps of the American West. This copy has been dry mounted and has endured some less than great treatment. The map and board is cracked in four locations, each slightly into the map itself. No loss of any content. One small divot from verso slightly punctured map on recto. Minor soiling and foxing. Please examine scans. Despite all flaws, the map, while published folded, is almost void of any visible folds and presents remarkably well. Deserves a nice frame and light restoration work which would cover most of the flaws. Will incur extra shipping costs. Good Condition. Carl Wheat writes in "Mapping the Transmississippi West, " It is a map of all the territory of the United States west of the 105th meridian. Accordingly, it presents, in wonderful detail, the American West, from the front line of the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. It shows the routes followed by Fremont's various expeditions from 1842 through 1846, and benefits significantly from the exploration of Edward Kern, as part of Fremont's third expedition. The map is the first to show the location of the recent gold discoveries in California, and also is the first to identify the entrance to San Francisco Bay as the Golden Gate." Originally published in John C. Fremont's, "Geographical Memoir Upon Upper California" and is mapped at a scale of 1:3,000,000. Hand-coloration at boundaries. A great opportunity to acquire an important map of western exploration at a reasonable price.

Map First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Lt. Gunnison and Charles Preuss (illustrator). 1st Edition. Good. Contemporary cloth binding. Provenance - from Glasgow University Library, with the stamp sized coat of arms pasted beside the title of each map, as pictured. The map is paper and has a few splits to creases and the occasional hole to corners where creases intersect, all as pictured. In 1852, Stansbury was ordered to travel from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to survey the Great Salt Lake in Utah, evaluate emigration trails, especially in Oregon and Mormon trails, and to scout for possible locations for a transcontinental railroad. The expedition consisted of 18 men including his second in command Lieutenant John Williams Gunnison. Over the few years to follow the expedition covered the Great Salt Lake, Utah Lake and Cache Valley of northern Utah all the way to Fort Hall in Southern Idaho. Stansbury?s seminal 1852 map of the Great Salt lake region in Utah is considered to be the first accurate survey of the Great Basin as well as a cornerstone achievement in the mapping of the American West. Measurements: Map of the Great Salt Lake and Adjacent Country in the Territory of Utah: 44" x 32? Map of Reconnaissance between Fort Leavenworth on Missouri River, and the Great Salt Lake in the Territory of Utah: 30? x 69?.

Drawn by Charles Preuss Under the Order of the Senate of the United States. Washington City 1848. Lithographed by E. Weber & Co., Baltimore. (Wheat, 1995, 41). This is the California and Great Basin portion, issued in "Ex. Doc. No. 17, House of Representatives, in 1850, of the same, but larger map that included Oregon, issued in 1848 with Senate Misc. Doc. No. 148, 30th Congress, 1st Session. 16 5/8 x 19 ½ inches, folded size 4 ½ x 7 1/2. (See Carl I. Wheat, "The Maps of the California Gold Region" 1848-1857, numbers 40 and 41, the Martino reprint,1995). This map shows all of California; all the area that would become Nevada and the western half of Arizona; east to the Wasatch Range and "Mormon Settlements"; slivers of Oregon to the north and Mexico to the south. The route of all Fremont s explorations to date are traced. With folds for insertion in the House document or perhaps in the pamphlet included below. In Fine condition. With: "Geographical Memoir Upon Upper California in Illustration of His Map of Oregon and California, by John Charles Fremont" Washington: Wendell and Van Benthuysen, Printers, 1848. First edition (Kurutz, 256a; Cowan, p.223; Howes, F366). Original printed pale blue wrappers, 67 pp. Cowan asserts that "the folding map accompanies but few copies"; Howes did not see a copy with a map; the present copy shows no sign of having included the map. Some wear to the edges and dog-eared leaves, a Very Good copy. There was another, abbreviated, 40 page edition issued in 1849, the Tippin & Streeper (printers) edition (Wheat, 87).
