Clean text; 283 pages, with Appendix. Top edge gilt, others rough-cut. Two bookplates on the front paste-down, one armorial and the other a small modern. 9'' x 4'' colour printed triptych folding pamphlet opening to 9'' x 12'' with tri-colour flag tipped to the cream paper printed in red, white and blue, this opens to each side showing how all four flags of the United Kingdom arrive at making up the Union Jack. Lord Rosebery gives a detailed explanation to the Edinburgh School Children (February 22nd, 1908) on the construction of the flag. Note tipped to the front cover explaining how Thomas Nelson, of Edinburgh, have kindly allowed this Union Jack to be purchased specially for the Members of Junior Branch of the Imperial Maritime League for presentation on Empire Day, 24th May 1909. 'The Union Jack' poem to the front cover by J. E. P. Member of the P.B.F.A. HERALDRY (Armorial Bearings).

Quarto (30 x 24cm), with 70 numbered pages of news clippings, 111 blank numbered pages, and 12 pages of official typed letters from the Robert Louis Stevenson Memorial Committee at rear. Publisher's burgundy cloth with black and gilt titles and decoration to spine and upper. Moderate spotting and toning throughout. Cloth shows moderate general wear and some toning to spine. Very good. An extremely comprehensive record of developments in the campaign to erect a memorial to the late author Robert Louis Stevenson in Edinburgh, including many clippings from Scottish newspapers such as The Scotsman, where the process began on 25th August 1896 with a letter to the Editor from Lord Rosebery: "How will this generation stand with posterity if it neglect to show its appreciation of a consummate and delightful artist, whose originality and imagination have enriched our literature as well as our time?" A memorial was finally unveiled by Lord Rosebery in St Giles Cathedral on 27th June 1904, where it remains today.
