Freund was the executive director of the Berlin Jewish community from 1902 till 1938 and also worked at the Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums. He was also instrumental in the formation of the Preussischer Landesverband Jüdischer Gemeinden in 1922. After emigrating to Palestine in 1938 he wrote various works on German Jewish history (EJ) .
