Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. First Spanish Edition. Red cloth covered boards with lightly rubbed gilt title on spine. Bumped spine ends and corners. Mild edgewear and soil. 1'' dent to lower front board edge where board is showing. Binding tender in places, text clean. Illustrated with many color plates with tissue guards. Pages lightly age toned. The last 1/4 of the pages are rippled (but not stuck together or visibly stained) , and rear board has a 6''x2'' waterstain. No previous owner names, stickers or stamps. Faint foxing to interior and text block. An uncommon book. ; Small 4to, hardcover, 188 pages.

xi, 251 pp. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham with 12 tipped-in color plates and other illustrations in black and white. Folio, publisher's green cloth. First trade edition. The cloth of this copy is quite damaged, discolored and separating from the front board to a depth of about two inches around the outside edge. The illustrated front endsheet is dampstained and the rear free endpaper tanned. There is a very slight dampstain to the reverse of the frontispiece mount; otherwise the plates and text are all fine.

This copy is accompanied by an extra plate signed by Rackham, enclosed in the publisher's printed envelope. Old bookplate on illustrated pastedown; front joint cracking; corners bumped and rubbed. The printed envelope containing the extra plate has a few tiny tears along the edges.

Signed limited edition, number 443 of 525 copies, signed by the artist. The limited edition included an "extra plate", being a duplicate of "He hurried away with long strides", signed by Rackham and this is present here in the original printed envelope. A review in The Bookman noted that "Here is an ideal conjunction of author and artist - the fairy and folk tales of the Brothers Grimm could not have a more fitting illustrator than Arthur Rackham, nor he more suitable authors to illustrate." Latimore and Haskell, pp. 46-7; Riall, p.129. The Bookman, December 1917, p. 156. Quarto. Original grey cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover lettered and decorated in gilt on white background, pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Housed in a custom brown cloth slipcase with white morocco opening. Colour frontispiece and 11 colour plates mounted on grey paper, black and white illustrations in the text, all by Rackham. With additional plate. Extremities a little bumped, minor tear to top of front joint, front hinge split but firm, some foxing and browning, minor creases to two plates, light soiling and creases to envelope: a very good copy.
