Octavo, khaki cloth & orange boards (hardcover), 306 pp. Very Good+, with light foxing (age darkened spotting) to endpapers; in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket with edgewear. From dust jacket: A wry but affectionate look at South Florida's most extraordinary phenomenon -- the city which took over a swampy, mosquito-ridden sandbar and has hardly noticed, in its jet-age flowering, that one of its prime assets -- the sand itself -- has almost disappeared. The only that hasn't changed is the climate. Coconuts and flamingos has supplanted the native mangroves and crocodiles, Biscayne Bay is dotted with artificial islands, and a solid wall of hotels blocks the sea from view. Without the climate, Miami Beach wouldn't exist. The sun has brought farmers wanting to make a killing in exotic fruits, rich men with polo ponies, parties and pretty girls, real-estate prmoters with blue-sky schemes, the Mafia with gambling casinos, entertainers, credit-card carriers, conventioneers, senior citizens and fly-now, pay-laters. The Beach has not only absorbed them all, but hurricanes, scandals, bankruptcies and Congressional investigations as well, without seeming to miss a beat. It has become a nightmare mixture of impossible dreams beyond any imagined by its founding fathers. Polly Redford has been an amused observer of the South Florida scene for 13 years. To write this entertaining chronicle she sought out pioneers (many of whom are still living, for the Beach is only 55 years old), dug through the private papers of the arch-promoter Carl Fisher, examined newspaper files and the special collections of the Miami Public Library and the University of Miami's Richter Library. She has written an absorbing and witty book in the magnificent tradition of Cleveland Amory's classic tribute to Boston. Florida, Floridiana, Florida History, Americana, U.S.-iana, U. S. History, American History. yslic.

Hardback. Condition: Very Good-. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Illustrated by Edward Gorey (illustrator). First Edition; First Printing. 1st edition hbk in d/w; although this is ex school-library, this book looks hardly, if at all, read; the book itself has bright blue covers with gold gilt lettering to spine; inside cover has a sellotape mark, and there is damage to fep where stiker has been removed; there is 1 rubber stamp on title page; the pages themselves look really fresh and clean - my guess is unread; inside rear cover is another brown sellotape mark and another damage patch, I think where sellotape removed; the unfaded re d/w is only spoilt by having JF written on the spine; a nice copy of a scarce Gorey illustrated 1st edition; at the time of writing this was the only known book of orithological science fiction. ; Ex-Library; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
