First Edition
First 4to, stiff wrappers, 80 pp, 52 illustrations (4 in color), bibliography. Published in an edition of 11,500 copies. A collaborative effort between the Art Institute of Chicago (Daniel Catton Rich was its Director of Fine Arts) and the Museum of Modern Art, this catalog was the first substantial monograph in English on the artist. Rousseau was first scorned, then loved, for his "naivete". Having spent the first part of his adulthood in the army and as a minor customs official (whence the nickname "Le Douanier"), he became a "professional painter" at the age of 40. Although he became celebrated in avant-garde circles, he sold few works during his lifetime. Freitag 8440. Very good in a soiled dj.
