Richard Gimbel purchased Edgar Allan Poe's Philadelphia residence and after refurbishment, donated the house and his extensive collection of Poe books and manuscripts (including the original manuscript of MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE) to the city as a museum. He later built impressive Dickens, Hardy, Thomas Paine, and aeronautical collections. In 1953 he was appointed curator of Aeronautical Literature at the Yale University Library.
