Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. 1st Edition. First edition hardcover, bound in dark tan cloth, with black lettering on front cover and on spine, is in G condition, having a slight concavity to spine, some faint residue spots of some kind of lacquer on front and back covers, and general page darkening typical of books of this age and grade of rather inexpensive paper. Dust jacket, enclosed in protective mylar (mylar not pictured), is in Poor condition, having much chipping and wear to edges, a missing chunk on the back left bottom side, tears and wrinkles, and faint lacquer spot on front. Still, the front cover is arresting in color, showing John Barrymore and Mary Astor in a romantic embrace. The jacket is price-clipped. Strangely, on the DJ spine there is no typical printed title, but just a typed (with a typewriter) title: "Don Juan." Possibly a seller's sample? A rare item in hardcover and DJ. As typical of Jacobsen movie editions, there are no interior photographs, but back of DJ shows five photos from the film, but unfortunately little remains of the one at the bottom left. "Lithe swashbuckler in the best silent tradition, but with a synchronized score (by William Axt) which made it a sensation and led directly to the talkie revolution."--Leslie Halliwell. Cinema. Early sound films. DB.

Photoplay edition issued to coincide with the British release of the MGM silent film swashbuckling epic starring John Barrymore, Mary Astor, and Myrna Loy. Very good copy with a thin split to the rear hinge in a very good dust jacket with a 1/2Ó chip at the head of the spine and some tiny tears and small chips. The front panel of the jacket is a full color painting of the dashing Barrymore kneeling to kiss the hem of AstorÕs gown. The rear panel painting shows a pensive Barrymore leaning against a table toasting with a glass of wine.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor dj. First Edition. [book a little shelfworn, but binding intact (more than one usually finds with these cheaply-produced volumes), one-time owner's signature and date on ffep; the jacket is mostly complete but is in three pieces, held together only by the mylar jacket cover]. (Warner Bros. Classics of the Screen) Series Novelization of the 1926 film starring John Barrymore and Mary Astor, the first full-length feature presented in Vitaphone -- in this instance used only to provide a synchronized musical score and sound effects, not yet spoken dialogue (that would have to wait about another year, for the appearance of "The Jazz Singer"). This "off-brand" photoplay edition series, published by Jacobsen (earlier Jacobsen-Hodgkinson) from 1925 to about 1928, was primarily issued in softcover, with selected titles also given hardcover printings; all the hardcover editions are exceedingly scarce, all the more so in jackets. (The softcover issues seem to have used the series title "Popular Plays and Screen Library," although this particular volume is designated as part of the "Warner Bros. Classics of the Screen" series.) Please note that unlike the Grosset & Dunlap and A.L. Burt photoplay editions, this volume contains no stills from the film; the rear jacket panel design, however, incorporates five small images. Also NOTE that no attempt has been made to repair or restore this dust jacket, i.e. there is no tape affixed, nor anything else that would prevent a proper restoration effort (and, as noted, the jacket is almost all there). NOISBN.
