Catalogue to accompany the exhibition held at The Israel Museum; curated by the author. A very thorough study of the establishment, history, and culture of Bezalel; of the works produced there; and of its founder, Boris Schatz. The exhibition honored the founder of the Bezalel School, Boris Schatz (1866- 1932). With a chronology table and Student's record book. "The Bezalel school artists blended "varied strands of surroundings, tradition and innovation," in paintings and craft objects that invokes "biblical themes, Islamic design and European traditions," in their effort to "carve out a distinctive style of Jewish" art for the new nation they intended to build in the ancient Jewish homeland. The works of art created by the group contributed significantly to the creation of a distinctive Israeli national culture. The founder of the school was Boris Schatz, who left his position as head of the Royal Academy of Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria, to make aliyah 1906 and established an academy for Jewish arts in Jerusalem. The artists were Zionist immigrants from Europe and the Middle East, with all the psychological and social upheaval that this implies. The movement developed a distinctive style combining Biblical and Zionist subjects with art nouveau, symbolism and traditional Persian and Syrian artistry. Like the British Arts and Crafts Movement, Wiener Werkstätte in Vienna, William Morris firm in England, and Tiffany glass Studios in New York, the Bezalel School produced decorative art objects in a wide range of materials: silver, leather, wood, brass and fabric. While the artists and designers were European-trained, the craftsmen who executed the works were often members of the Yemenite community, which had a long tradition of craftsmanship in precious metals, and began to make aliyah about 1880. Yemenite immigrants with their colorful traditional costumes were also frequent subjects of Bezalel School artists." frontispiece photo, 392 pp., color plates, duotone and drawings, tipped-in folding chronology, tipped-in "Students Notebook," Key to Bezalel Circle, selected biographies, bibliography Foreword and Acknowledgements by Dr. Mrtin weyl. The inscription ends with, in Yiddish:] "As memento from Boris Schatz." Very rare first Yiddish edition. "Boris Schatz's exile on the shores of the sea of Galilee during World War I, was a time of fruitful contemplation and writing. He composed this fictional story, set in Eretz Israel one hundred years into the future, which offered a sublime alternative to the miserable reality of strife and struggle that had engulfed him in recent years. His utopian novella was a programmatic manifesto written according to the conventions of the then popular literary genre of the futuristic novel. The story opens with the biblical artisan Bezalel ben Uri miraculously appearing at the Bezalel School one day in the midst of the war and inviting Schatz on a tour of Eretz Israel in the year 2018. This device allowed the author to present a detailed description of Bezalel and the Land of Israel of the Future" (Boris Schatz: The Father of Israeli Art [Israel Museum Catalog, 2006]). Softcover. Condition: g- to g+. First edition. 12mo. 43pp. [3]. Illustrated tan and black paper wrappers. B/w frontispiece photographic portrait of Boris Schatz. This scarce Yiddish-languge work is an early illustrated monograph with the aim of promoting and raising money for the work of the pioneering Bezalel Art School in Jerusalem. Founded in 1906 by Boris Schatz (who wrote the text), it was established as the first modern institute of higher learning in Palestine. Bezalel is the foundation of fine arts in Israel and is known as the most prestigious art institute in the country. The school is seen as an instrumental force in the development of modern Jewish art in the 20th century. The illustrations in b/w throughout, including the elaborately decorated front cover, along decorative head and tailpieces and large historiated initials in an indicative Jugenstill style, are all by Bezalel-educated painter and typographer Yaakov Stark (aka 'Ben David', 1881-1915). Also ampanying the text are numerous captioned b/w photographic reproductions after original images taken by photographer Zadok Basan (1882-1956). The images show the exterior and interior of the school, including many pictures of the faculty and students in class. Introductory text by then chairman of 'the Committee to help Jewish Workers in Syria and Palestine', Russian-born Zionist leader Menachem Ussishkin (1863-1941). The final pages contain advertisements in Russian, Yiddish and Hebrew. Main text throughout in Yiddish. Wrappers with some light stains, a paper label pasted on the spine, and a closed tear along the left side of the front cover. Ink stamp at the top of the front cover. Book block trimmed throughout the along the top edge, resulting in occasional minor loss of text (mostly just page numbers at the top). Interior with a closed tear to the frontispiece image. Age toning to pages throughout and a few instances of sporadic minor water spots, with most images throughout clean. Smudges and stains to pages 42-43. Wrappers in good-, interior in good+ condition overall. Framed. Condition: Very good condition. Complete set of fourteen silver Jewish-themed images by the artist Boris Schatz. Framed as follows: Top row: 1. Requiem, 2. Jeremiah, 3. Wailing Wall. Second row: 4. The Penitent, 5. Midnight Prayer, 6. When will the Miraculous End Come, Third row: 7. Tutor, 8. Herzl, 9. Blowing of the Shofar, Bottom row: 10. Grandmother, 11. Rabbi's Blessing, 12. Havdalah, 13. The Scribe, 14. One of the People of the Book. Boris Schatz [1866-1932] had a traditional Jewish upbringing until he left his family for Vilnius, Lithuania at the age of eighteen where he lived and studied for five years. In 1888, he moved to Warsaw to study sculpture and painting, and then moved to Paris to study at the Academie Cormon for five years with other artists including Mark Antokolski from Vilnius. While residing in Paris, Schatz was invited by Prince Ferdinand of Bulgaria to become his official court sculptor with the purpose of establishing the Royal Academy of Art in Sofia, an invitation he accepted. At the Fifth Zionist Congress in 1901, Schatz proposed the founding of a Jewish school for the arts in Palestine. The school opened in 1906, and was named Bezalel in honor of Bezalel Ben Uri the biblical Jewish artist [Exodus 31: 2-5] who was selected to design the Tabernacle and its sacred ritual objects. As an artist, Schatz's preferred media was the bas-relief, of which he was a master. He worked in silver, copper, brass and bronze. His silver-cast works are known for their light-catching qualities and he is best known for images like #2 "Jeremiah the Prophet" and #5 "Midnight Prayer." He believed in the melding of Jewish folk art motifs with biblical and historic images to create a new and individualistic Jewish Palestinian art movement. During World War I the Bezalel school was closed by the Turks. Schatz was arrested and deported to Syria. After the war and under the British mandate he was able to reopen the school. The Bezalel school suffered from financial difficulties from its reopening until it closed in 1929. As a result, Schatz had to resort to making numerous fundraising trips to the U.S. where he sold his own work and promoted his prominent artists, including Zeev Raban and Gor Aryeh, in addition to the textile and metal work produced by the school. The first public exhibitions of Palestinian Jewish artists in Europe and the United States were organized by Schatz. In 1932, while fundraising in Colorado, USA, he died of a heart attack. Motifs partially tarnished. Matted behind glass in aluminum frame (loose at lower corners, reinforced with white tape at top edges.
