Decorated Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Sendak, Maurice (illustrator). New York: Farrar, Straus, Giroux, 1974. Two volume set in slipcase. Grimm's fairy tales, selected by Lore Segal and Maurice Sendak. Translated by Lore Segal, with four tales translated by Randall Jarrell. Pictures by Maurice Sendak. First edition, second printing. Squared-off 12mo. Brown cloth binding with gold decoration and titles. Frontispieces by Sendak, heavily illustrated. Brilliant illustrations. Segal and Sendak chose 27 stories from the complete collection of 210. Among standards like "Hansel and Gretel", "The Fisherman and His Wife" and "The Frog King", there are many that most readers will not know at all. Chief among them is the title story, a masterpiece that modern anxieties seem to have suppressed. Sendak started considering the project in 1962; it was 10 years before he started drawing. Jackets and slipcase designed by Atha Tehon. Back of slipcase faded, sides lightly soiled. Paste-on by Sendak. Slipcase in very good condition. Volume I has previous owner's signature on ffep verso (Paul Magriel, world backgammon champion). Appears new and unread except for signature. Dustjacket has light spotting on front, very small closed tear in rear. Volume II is in fine condition. Dustjacket in fine condition. Both volumes now protected with mylar covers. A very nice set of books. Near fine in very good slipcase.
