Hardcover. Condition: Good+. Third Edition; First Printing. Full leather with titles in gilt on black panels on spine with five raised bands. Marbled endpapers and edges. Top three-quarters of an inch at top of spine of this volume is missing. Some edge, corner and surface wear. View scan. Some toning, mainly on endpapers; very little foxing. Book is square and binding secure. There is a small (1 inch square) personal library sticker showing where the book was shelved in the former owner's library. There is a bookplate on the front pastedown for Lord Walsingham, so the book may be from that gentleman's library. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 498 pages; This set is notably edited by Thomas Bowdler, from whom we get the word "bowdlerize." Bowdler removed or changed those words and passages that he thought might be offensive to tender sensibilities. Rather famous edition of Shakespeare's work. This volume includes: Tempest, Two Gent. Of Verona, Merry Wives, Twelfth Night, Measure for Measure and Much Ado. I have three of the eight volumes of this set listed. Inquire for a discount if you wish to buy all six.
