Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Foreword by Walter Lord. 4to. Burgundy cloth, pictorial dust jacket. 168pp. Numerous illustrations. Near fine/near fine. First edition of this amply-illustrated study of these "opulent and luxurious four-funnel passenger liners, of which only fourteen have ever been built. between 1897 and 1921." Front flyleaf bears a fine autograph addition: Tipped to it is a heavy stock 5½" X 3¼" card boldly signed in black ink by Lord -- a pre-printed reservation card for a meeting of the Civil War Round Table of New York (postal cancellation on verso 5 November 1956). Lord (1917-2002) of course authored the 1955 Titanic classic "A Night to Remember," among many other popular historical accounts -- a "Titanic" naturally features prominently among the vessels profiled in the Shaum book.
