Hardcover. 1st Edition. Cuthbert John (Jack) Skead (1912-2006) was a South African ornithologist, although he was originally trained as a sheep and dairy farmer. During his career, he published more than 100 articles and books about birds. This first edition of The Sunbirds of Southern Africa is in fine condition in a near fine dust wrapper, featuring extensive colour and b/w illustrations, as well as a gramophone record affixed at the rear pastedown. The orange cloth binding is immaculate. The contents are likewise with the exception of mild spotting to the top and fore edges. The record appears pristine, with no indication of ever having been previously removed from the sleeve. The dust jacket is bright, clean, and complete, marred only by slight wrinkling at points along the top edge.
