First edition of this biography of George Monk, one of the key figures in English political military and naval history, and the man single-handedly responsible for the Restoration of Charles II after the Civil War and Cromwell's rule. This adulatory biography - amounting at times to a hero-worshipping hagiography - is of great historical interest, being the first biography of the great man, written by his personal physician, Thomas Skinner. Binding partly rubbed along edges, with closed tears along joints. Offsetting to endpapers. Engraved frontispiece portrait missing. Binding in overall good, interior in very good condition.

Second edition, corrected. Published from the original manuscript of Thomas Skinner, with a preface by William Webster, the curate of St. Dunstans. With a portrait of George Monk, Duke of Albemarle to the frontispiece. This work explores the political and military career of George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle. Monk played an important role in the English Civil War, under the command of the monarch Charles I. In particular this work aims to address the the previous historical works on the Duke of Albemarle, in particular that written by the Earl of Clarendon. In addition the preface, written by William Webster, offers a vindication of Monk's conduct and character. An interesting account of the life and action of this noted British solider and politician.
