First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Plus. First Edition (NAP). Quarto. Red, cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering. A wee bit of rubbing to extremities, and very slight spine lean. Looks to be self-published by the (then) Chairman of the Board of W.E. & L. Gurley, a noted maker of surveying instruments. Notes on instruments, manufacturers' biographical sketches, etc. This is the defacto "bible" of antique surveying instruments, now migh-supplanted by the digital age. Many many black and white photographs, a bibliography and a thorough index. Note: A Volume II was issued around five years after this first edition, in 1967.
