Thick ledger, in original sheep with leather tips and labels, with extensive information from a maker of clothing for the United States Army. Approximately 100 leaves, of over 400, have been used. Internally fine. The binding is worn at extremities. Joints weak and worn. There is a manuscript price list tipped onto the front endpaper. While the firm name does not appear on a preliminary leaf as was the custom, it is highly likely that this ledger originated with this company. The firm name appears in an article from the US Army Corps of Engineers Office of History which identifies this firm as originators of the Castle insignia which appeared on buttons and caps of the Engineering Corps. www.hq.usace.army.mil/history/insignia.htm. The article has references both to John Smith and John Smith Fraser, in line with the â J.S.â initials on the ledger spine. This fits in perfectly with its military business described. The volume is filled with orders from active duty military officers for uniforms and accessories. These include orders from many figures who later became known as Civil War generals or leaders in the topographical engineers. At this point, most were only lieutanants or captains, recently out of West Point. There are many orders from officers at West Point, but there are also other orders which were to be delivered to officers at far-flung forts in Florida and the West, including Tampa Bay, Key West, Fort Leavenworth, Fort Winnebago, Detroit and many others. A partial list of the future (or current) generals whose names appear with orders for uniforms includes Sherman, Thomas, Halleck, Sykes, McDowell, Halleck, Reynolds, Scott, Bragg, Beauregard, McLaws, Garnett, and Longstreet. The topographical engineers listed include, but are not necessarily limited to, Stansbury, Fremont and Simpson. There are also hundreds of other officers listed who did not achieve such lasting distinction. A great archive providing insight into the early careers of many leading military figures of the 19th century.
