In better than typical condition, covers have light to moderate wear, about 1/4 inch missing from the top of the spine. Hinges are tight, contents have light foxing. Pastedown paper from inside of front cover is missing. Frontispiece illustration of Adam and Eve finding dead body of Abel. A two by one inch piece is missing from page XI.

Gessner (1730-1788) was "the most successful and typical representative of a rococo movement. His pastorals were translated into 20 languages" (Britannica online). Contemporary sprinkled calf, leather label and gilt rules and ornaments on spine, edges sprinkled red and blue. Some soiling and light foxing, but a very good copy.
