Milligan was first a Midshipman in the US Navy, where he took part in Commodore Perry's amphibious landings at Veracruz, during the Mexican-American war. He was later part of the "fifth expedition" by John Charles Frémont (1813-1890), to verify a proposed "Central Route" for an American transcontinental railroad (from about Richmond Virginia on the East Coast to San Francisco on the West). Included in this book is his diary of that expedition, giving the only detailed account of the day-by-day difficulties they encountered. Limited Edition 1 /750 copies; First Edition.
