Hardcover. 8vo. Blue cloth with gilt lettering. ix, 69pp. Frontispiece, illustrations, pictorial endpapers. Near fine. Light inoffensive stain on outer page edges. Bright and tight first edition of this memorial tribute, limited to 1000 copies printed for Stevenson's Princeton University class of 1922. This unique family copy hails from the library of Senator Adlai E. Stevenson III (b. 1930). Tipped in is an Autograph Letter Signed from a Lawrence Lewis Anderson Jr., 2pp (single leaf), 5" X 8", Princeton, NY, 9 December 1973. Very good. Boldly penned in blue ballpoint, it reads in part: "Herewith a copy of a small book privately printed by P-ton Class of 1922 at the time of presentation of the bronze bust of A.E.S. to the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International affairs here. I have sent two other copies to Nance [Stevenson], along with the name and address of the sculptress of the bust. The book is a bit parochial (and oriented to Class of '22), but you may find interest in the address by George Kennan -- and in the speech by Adlai III. Mrs. Chandler had a brother in my class (1918), but he was just a nodding acquaintance of mine. The copies of the little book are supplied with the good wishes of the Class of '22." Signed simply "L.L.A." Elisabeth Gordon Chandler (1913-2006) sculpted the superb head-and-shoulders bust of Stevenson that serves as this book's frontispiece, and her brother Harry Brace Gordon Jr. (1896-1961) was the classmate of Anderson's to which he refers. Tipped facing the half-title page is a heavy stock 4½" X 3" printed "With the Compliments of the Class of 1922" card (with scribbled note "One for Mr. Anderson and Two for the Senator's Lady").

First Edition
Hardcover. Edited by Alden Whitman. Brown cloth with gilt lettering. 45pp. Very good. Binding a tad irregularly sunned, else tight and internally near fine. Special edition, limited to 2,479 copies of this "best of" selection of Stevensonisms, published immediately following the governor's sudden death in 1965, culled largely from "The New York Times." This special copy belonged to the governor's son, Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. Senator from Illinois (1969-81). Long-time Harper & Row president and chairman Cass Canfield (1897-1986), also a long-time supporter of Governor Stevenson who worked on his 1956 presidential campaign, sent this copy to Senator Stevenson -- his small engraved calling card is still paper clipped to the front flyleaf.

Hardcover. 4to. Blue padded leatherette folder with black cloth tape spine. Gilt-bordered recto opening with clear mylar window. Near fine. Presentation folder given to then-U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Adlai Stevenson (1900-65), formerly Illinois governor and two-time Democratic presidential candidate. Window at right bears insert with (top to bottom) printed caption, two mint 4-stamp blocks and First Day Cover -- below which it is boldly signed by U Thant above his printed name and title. Thant (1909-71) was the Burmese diplomat and third secretary-general of the United Nations. Printed caption at top reads: "Presented to / Hon. Adlai E. Stevenson / Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary /United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations / On the Occasion of / United States-United Nations Commemorative Stamp Ceremony / Honouring International Co-operation Year / and / The 20th Anniversary of the United Nations / 26 June 1965." Below this are two U.N.-issued stamp blocks, at left the 5-cent "Co-Operation Year 1965" and at right the 15-cent "Annee de la Cooperation 1965." Below this is a First Day Cover bearing one of each of these stamps, cancelled in San Francisco on 23 June 1965. Decorative printed and blind-embossed cachet at left notes "First Day of Issue" and depicts the New York U.N. building along with the "Birthplace of the Charter / San Francisco, 1945." This anniversary event would have been meaningful to Stevenson, who in 1945 worked briefly for the State Department as aide to Secretary of State Edward Stettinius, helping Assistant Secretary of State Archibald MacLeish hammer out the United Nations charter. Little did he suspect that, a mere three weeks after receiving this folder from Thant, he would suffer a massive heart attack on a London sidewalk and die that same day at age 65. This choice memento was almost certainly the last communication between the secretary-general and the U.S. ambassador.
