This antique hardcover book is bound in black cloth with gilt spine lettering and a colorful paste-down cover plate that depicts the young Hiawatha sitting by a brook, spear in hand, with a little rabbit sitting next to him. Cover illustration is by M.L. Kirk, who also provided numerous full-color plates throughout the book. The book provides a storybook version of the tale told in Longfellow's classic poem, as well as reprinting the full text of the poem itself. Heavy wear along the front outer hinge, inner hinge has pulled away, but seems to be holding, Edgewear and soil to covers. Text block generally clean and bright. Book plate on front endpaper. 313 pages; approx. 7"x9".
