Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: NF. Photos (illustrator). 1st. De Havilland's famous Tiger Moth first flew in 1931 and today the remaining Tigers are a prized and iconic possession and a reminder of the the part it played in the development of aviation. This "Tribute" to the Tiger Moth is presented in seven chapters, each introduced with short text and coveing its origins, earliest uses, construction., its military traning role, the various tasks to which it was adapted and how it became one of the most sought after classic aircraft to aviation enthusiasts. In the main "The Tiger Moth" has a visual impact, rather than for its brief but informative text, The emphasis is on the pictorial, represented by an amazing collection of colour and b/w photographs ranging from its first roll-out from the manufacturer to restored and flying examples. The illustrations cover all aspects from the life of theTiger Moth and each is accompanied by a comprehansive caption. About 9000 of the planes were built, (the last ibn 1944), mainily as trainers during WWII, with Canada, Australia and New Zealand producing them, as well as in Great Brtain, and numerous modifications were introduced. Many thousands of WWII pilots learned to fly in them. De-mobbed after hostilities ended Tiger Moths were sold to civilian users at very low prices and put to a variety of uses, including as props in movies, by flying clubs, parachuting and wing walking displays, in agrigulture and as air racers, to name a few. Here the Tiger Moth is seen in its many guises --- as a makeshift, bomber, a float plane and radio controlled target, aerial agriculture and providfing air show entertainment. Some are seen in less happy situations. An excellent "tribute" to a much-loved aircraft, one that helped bidge the gap between the frabic, wood and wire era and the jet age. First edition from Airlife of 1987, 160 pages, lavishly illustrated with colour and b/w photos throughout. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles are NF, ink gift inscription top FFEP, text block otherwise NF. Colour pictorial DJ also NF.

"Tiger Moth is a pictorial history of one of the world's greatest airplanes. Great not only in terms of numbers built and surviving, but in the affection generated by this amalgam of wood, wire and tube which has been responsible for training unknown thousands of airmen during more than half a century of uninterrupted operations. The Tiger Moth was born from the necessity to continue development of de Havilland's ubiquitous Moth family. Legends surrounding the development of the first DH82 have been embellished with the passage of time. In a Stag Lane shed, stagger and sweep were said to have been determined by pencil calculations on the proverbial evelope with DJ60T rear spars were shortened with a handsaw. Following taxi trials, lower mainplane dihedral was added, adjusted to the length of the grass. The Tiger Moth has been privy to fifty years of aviation development. During her operational life she has seen wooden biplane airliners evolve into stainless steel projectiles carrying passengers faster than a rifle bullet. The Tiger Moth was conceived as a training aircraft, a role to which she was and continues to be admirably suited, but as the photographs in this book illustrate, she has been adapted to almost every aviation situation possible to imagine. To compile this pictorial volume, Stuart McKay sifted through thousands of photographs, some discovered in unlikely parts of the world, while occasional gems arrived underalded, freshly torn from long cherished personal albums. The majority of contributions were selected from collections held by libraries and museums, and from the modern custodians of history: Tiger Moth owners and pilots. The aim has been to present a balanced review of the life and times of the Tiger Moth, from the early thirties to the present day, with a hint of the future added for good measure. There can never be a Tiger Moth replacement. Who would ever dare to try?" - from the inner front jacket flap.
