Hardcover. Condition: g. 4 volumes in two. 12mo. 219pp. 182pp. 173pp. 250pp. 1/4 leather over paper covered boards with gilt lettering on red to spines. French translation of the literary classic "Gulliver's Travels." Gulliver's episodic series of adventures on far off island satirize European politics and parody the "travelers' tales" literary sub-genre. Captioned full-page copper engraved frontispieces to all volumes (i.e. four frontispieces). The work was translated by the Abbe Pierre François Guyot-Desfontaines, an important 18th century journalist, critic, translator and historian. He is often considered the founder of modern literary criticism and journalism in France. Desfontaines attempted to plagiarize Swift's work and published it in Amsterdam as his own work adopted from an English manuscript. Additional full-page copper engraving to all volumes (i.e. four). Altogether 8 copper engravings. With an introduction by the translator, dated 1727. Text in French. Head and tail of spines slightly bumped. Minor to head of spine of second book. Corners rubbed and slightly worn. Scuffing and rubbing to boards. Loose but present ribbon marker to book 2. In overall good condition.
