Matthew Hale Carpenter was a abolitionist sympathiser and he supported the Union and emancipation for the slaves during the Civil War. This is his biography. This book is an ex-library book ( from The Public Lending Library of Victoria ) and has all faults of same -- book number on the spine, "Notice to Lenders" pasted onto the free front endpaper, numerous stamps and on the rear paste down on and the endpaper pocket and "Due Date" panel. Bookseller's sticker to the the free front endpaper, on the lower left hand corner is the original bookseller's sticker and on the top right-hand corner. A previous owner has placed the number " 1463 " in ink on the same page. The cloth of the book has become rubbed in faded and the corners of the book and the head and the heel of the spine are bumped. This is the First USA Edition. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
