Portions of cloth are missing from spine and corners, revealing binding beneath. Boards are just hanging on; binding is quite fragile. No printed publication date. This volume contains all 22 listed plates with tissue guards; all 22 remain in good condition, if lightly foxed. First signature is detached from binding, but present and not missing any pages. Some evidence of insect damage along edges of first few pages, but it doesn't extend beyond that. Though this volume has seen some wear and tear over the years, it remains a classic of Civil War history in fair reading condition, and difficult to find complete with all 22 plates. Early printings. 664; 680; 738pp. Quarto [28.5 cm] 3/4 blue leather with plum cloth covered boards, raised bands, red leather gilt stamped spine labels, and gilt tooled spines. All edges gilt. Marbled endsheets. Volume 1 has been rebacked, with a just a little over half of the original backstrip overlaid. The extremities are rubbed, and the covers are sun faded. There are several small light stains and faint indentations on the covers. The front pastedowns preliminary pages have binder's tickets, notations, and small stamps. The illustrations are occasionally offset, and there are sporadic small stains and light moisture stains on the pages. The widest moisture stains are thin, and measure 4 inches wide. There are a bit more of them in the top margins of volume 2. May require extra postage due to weight. Lavishly illustrated with many battle scenes and portraits of leading figures.
