First Edition
Half Leather. Condition: Good binding. Quarto. Volume I:xxxix, [1], 262, [1]; II: [6], 289; III: xvi, 325; IV: [6], 303, [4]; V: xvi, 199, [1] pp. Limited edition, number 379 of 500 copies. As issued, backed in red leather with corners and cream buckram over boards; largely unopened. Spines are sunned and discolored; closed tear to the leather at the head of Volume IV; there is some red-rot to the leather as it leaves a light residue when handled; boards are generally grubby; while the exterior has much to be desired, the interiors are quite clean but for a previous owner name on the front free endpaper of Volume I. Beautifully printed on Batchelor's Shakespeare Head handmade paper using Bruce Rogers's Centaur type. 50 full-page wood engravings by Farleigh are scattered throughout all the volumes. Though the condition of the bindings leave something to be desired, this remains an exceptional example of Shakespeare Head Press printing under the capable direction of Bernard Newdigate.
