Buckley, 1722 [i.e. 1723]. [iv], 152 pp. With an initial imprimatur leaf dated Jan. 21, 1722/3. Folio (12-1/2" x 8"). Disbound stab-stitched pamphlet, light soiling to exterior, light shelfwear, later markings in pencil to verso of rear endleaf. Light toning to text, minor stain to fore-edge of text block, early annotation to foot of p. 152. A nice copy. $125. * First edition. This is the standard contemporary account of Layer's trial, which resulted from his leadership during Jacobite Rebellion of 1722. Also known as the Atterbury Plot, this was the second attempt to return James II to the thrones of England and Scotland. The trial ended with the execution of Layer and most of his colleagues. (One of them, Francis Atterbury, the Bishop of Rochester, was banished.) This account was reissued in Dublin in 1723. The annotation states the date of Layer's execution.
