Le texte du poète grec Odysséas Elytis, prix Nobel 1979, proposé dans ce livre en bilingue grec moderne - français, a été écrit en 1964 pour figurer dans l'album "Yannis Tsarouchis - Quinze oeuvres et une lithographie originale", publié à Athènes. Les illustrations du livre sont les reproductions d'oeuvres de Yannis Tsarouchis. Le peintre Yannis Tsarouchis - d'un an l'aîné d'Elytis - est un des peintres grecs du 20e siècle les plus remarquables et les plus appréciés en France, où il a longtemps travaillé.L'essai que lui consacre Elytis, très inspiré, est d'une qualité littéraire qui le place très au-dessus d'un simple article critique. C'est qu'Elytis a le don de transformer en poésie tout ce qu'il touche, mais c'est aussi que le texte a été écrit à un moment privilégié, pendant lequel les deux hommes, réunis à Mytilène, ont travaillé ensemble et mis beaucoup en commun. Le texte est bien connu en Grèce, où on le voit comme une approche inégalable du travail de Tsarouchis.Il figure d'ailleurs en préface dans le catalogue de la rétrospective que le Musée Bénaki a consacrée à Tsarouchis, à Athènes, en 2016. Commentaire hors pair d'une oeuvre picturale, le texte constitue en même temps, et surtout, un condensé des idées et des intuitions qui sous-tendent l'oeuvre d'Elytis, sur la peinture, la nature de l'art, ce qui définit l'artiste, les rapports entre tradition et modernité, ce que c'est que d'être Grec.Seize oeuvres du peintre ont été choisies en contrepoint du texte, pour s'associer étroitement avec le détail de ce qu'exprime Elytis. Elles illustreront avec précision le propos du poète ; et constitueront d'autre part un corpus d'images où on retrouvera la diversité de style qui caractérise la production de Tsarouchis. Ces dessins et tableaux sont reproduits avec l'aimable autorisation de la Fondation Tsarouchis à Athènes, qui détient les droits pour l'ensemble de son oeuvre.Les deux atouts de cette édition sont d'une part qu'elle montrera des oeuvres picturales peu exposées en France et inconnues de beaucoup de lecteurs, et d'autre part que la présence du texte grec en vis-à-vis du texte français permettra à tout lecteur un tant soit peu frotté de grec d'aller et venir à son gré entre le prestigieux texte original et sa traduction.
