Signed by Dean on the title page, additionally, there is a note written on the verso of his business card and laid in. In publisher's cloth. A bright fresh copy. Published by A.S. Johnson, Columbia, South Carolina, 1848
Seller: Jim Crotts Rare Books, LLC, Clemmons, NC, U.S.A.
Quarto, [iv], iv, [2], 293, lvi p. and errata slip, text illustrations, colored frontispiece and two folding colored geologic maps. An overall Good copy, bound in the original embossed green cloth with a gilt vignette of a palmetto tree and rising sun on the front cover. The covers are detached and edgeworn, with old tape marks near the backstrip. Cover gilt bright. Backstrip badly chipped, lacking the upper third. Binding firm. Save for occasional light foxing to a few leaves, most text pages are fresh, clean and bright. The colored maps are particularly well preserved. The large hand-colored map, "Geological Map of South Carolina, 1845", unfolds to 18.5 by 21 inches and displays 15 vibrant colors. A bookplate on the front pastedown indicates that this volume was presented to Harvard University by J.D. Whitney; earlier, contemporary signature of "W. Gibbs" (likely Wolcott Gibbs) on the title page, and later bookplates on the front endpapers. The covers/spine condition notwithstanding, this is a nice copy of a scarce treatise. Hazen 10438. BMNH 1978. Marcou 546. Ward and Carozzi 2204.

TUOMEY, Michael. MALLET, J. W. (ed.). First [and Second] Biennial Report on the Geology of Alabama. Tuskaloosa: Printed by M. D. J. Slade, 1850 & Montgomery: N. B. Cloud, 1858. 1st eds. 2 vols., bound in one. 8vo. xxxii, 176; xix, [1], 292 pp., map, folding plate, illus. In early 3/4 morocco with marbled paper over boards. Lacking the map to accompany the first report. Neatly rebacked with original backstrip laid down. Former library copies with stamps and numbers. Contents foxed. Contemporary gift inscription on the title page of the second report. Conservation to folding plate with infilling to some loss, extending into the illustration. Map has also had conservation work done to discreetly mend closed tears. Generally, very good. Ellison 729 & 1098. Owen p. 946. Marcou Mapoteca Geologica Americana 547 & 552. Kidd in her biographical sketch for the Encyclopedia of Alabama identifies Tuomey's significance to Alabama. He was the state's first geologist and appointment that led to the foundation of the Geological Survey of Alabama. "Tuomey's scientific description of the state's geology was the beginning of a true understanding of its mineral resources, particularly the coal and iron ore that led to Birmingham's rise as an industrial center." Regarding the Second Report, Owen notes: "Pending the publication of this report, Mr. Tuomey died. Dr. Mallet was appointed to supervise its issue, and after many difficulties, recounted in the preface, it appeared. In addition to the general editorial work, Dr. Mallet contributed the report on the chemical department of the survey" (p. 946). The Marcous in Mapoteca Geologica Americana note that the first edition of Tuomey's map is "the rarest geological map of the New World. Only 5 or 6 copies are known to exist." While that census has surely increased since 1884, it is not surprising that it is lacking from this present copy. They go on to describe the second edition of Toumey's map, present here, which they claim is in some ways inferior to the first edition because Toumey died before it's publication and so it was printed by J. H. Colton without supervision. Also, the scale is smaller than the first. "However, it contains some corrections brought about by Tuomey's survey and explorations of the years 1854 and 1855. It is the first geological maps colored by chromolithography in America" (Marcou 552).
