Prof Edward Turner MD, FRS, FRSE, FRCPE (1796 - 1837) was a Jamaican-born, British physician and chemist, known for his work on atomic weights, and as a populariser of the atomic theory of Dalton. He was the author of a popular Chemistry textbook that was the first to incorporate chemical symbols and formulae as well as organic chemistry. His reviser, Dr. Franklin Bache (1792 - 1864), was a prominent American physician and expert on chemistry and pharmacopeias: Professor of Chemistry in the Franklin Institute (1826-32), the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy (1831-41), thence to Jefferson Medical College. In 1819, Bache published a "System of Chemistry for the Use of Students of Medicine"; and in connection with Dr. George Wood, he prepared in 1830, a Pharmacopoeia that was adopted by a national convention of physicians, and became the basis of the present U. S. Pharmacopoeia and U. S. Dispensatory. Fifth American from the Fifth London edition.

Condition very good corners and spine ends are rubbed, cloth rubbed through at part of the hinges and as such hinges are little weak, 2 lines of previous owner's ms notes to ffep in vol 1, end-papers and page edges slightly toned, other than this the pages are very clean throughout, some pages still uncut/unopened. Volume 1 contains a sepia toned tissue-protected frontispiece portrait of George Rolleston. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.
