Cloth. Condition: Near fine. First Thus. 4to. Publisher's cloth. Publisher's sheet on the works of Abbe tipped in. Abbe's woodcuts throughout. Finely printed on Arches paper. 37 pp. Small scuff at footer of spine. Signed by Abbe on colophon. Excellent condition. This is a limited edition (numbered 159 of 275) printing of Turner's famous essay (often called the Frontier Thesis) which was read at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Turner's Frontier Thesis was a major influence on the popularization of the ideas of American exceptionalism and manifest destiny, the theory that America was not only morally obligated but predestined to colonize the savage West. This volume is a 1956 reprint of Turner's essay, illustrated with original woodcuts by Vermont sculptor Abbe and signed by her on the colophon. A gorgeous edition of this important work.
