Corners are bumped and a heavily frayed and spine ends are crushed, with some small splits and chips. Tanning to spine and edges. Boards are bowed. Book has a forward lean. Decorative Boards. Condition: Good. No Jacket. A good copy of this 256 page edition. Frontispiece plus 6 other plates - all in very good condition. Green embossed decorative board binding with coloured cartouche stuck on to front cover. There appear to be two pages missing at the front: the front fep (which, in being removed, has also taken off some of the front pastedown), and a page between the frontispiece and the title page. Text block tight and clean - apart from 2 or 3 marginal pencil marks. Boards quite bright still, and not cocked.

First has vignette and b/w frontispiece with tissue guard. Previous owner's name to this title page. Second title page has different vignette with motto, and line border. Vignettes to first and last pages of each chapter. Four full-page b/w plates. Preface: 'This volume, in this Edition, has been to a great extent re-written, and four new chapters have been added'. A few marks in ink to first page of chapter 1. Very solidly bound book, 340pp plus publisher's lists.

Full reeded maroon cloth with gilt titles and decoration to spine; aeg; primrose yellow endpapers. Spine lightly sunned; spine tips and corners rubbed. Scattered foxing, heavier to tissue guards. Contemporary gift inscription to second blank, to Anna Earle [or Carle] from her friends Mrs and the Misses Davey, dated in year of publication. A Very Good copy. Extended by four chapters and substantially revised, the work was written in an attempt to train young girls to "connect happiness or sorrow with conduct and character" and reinforce religious teachings and morals. While plenty of similar volumes were available aimed at young men, this volume attempted to redress the gender imbalance to give guidance to females.
