Based upon the edition of The Georgics printed by the Officina Bodoni at Verona for the Limited Editions Club. Illustrations by Bruno Bramanti. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Age toning. Sandglass (Heritage Club monthly newsletter) laid-in. Slipcase with moderate shelfwear. "As Virgil's epitaph states, he wrote successively of pastoral life, of country things, and of deeds of arms. His final masterpiece, in which he related the legend of the coming of Trojan refugees to Italy, both foretold the glory of imperial Rome and measured the human cost of 'the doubtful doom of man'. He is said to have considered it far from finished at the time of his death. Previously he had perfected and published a different kind of poem, The Georgics, which is loosely comparable to such English poems as James Thomson's The Seasons and William Cowper's The Task." - page vii. Book First Edition
Decorative Cloth. Condition: Very Good. First Edition Thus. Virgil's great epic poem, written from about 29 to 19 bc during the reign of Augustus, Rome's first emperor. Composed of 9,896 lines in dactylic hexameter, it is one of the cornerstones of western classical literature. Modeled after Homer's "The Illiad" and "The Odyssey," The Aeneid tells the story of the Trojan hero, Aeneas, who escapes the fall of Troy with the help of the gods and endures numerous perils and dangerous adventures to fulfill his divine destiny as founder of Rome. This English translation by 17th century English poet, John Dryden, is still considered among the best. The Heritage Press was established in the 1930s by George Macy to provide more affordable, though still limited, editions of works previously published by The Limited Edition Club. This is a first printing, first Heritage Press edtion. About 7 1/4 x 10 3/4 inches, 397 pages in black cloth-covered boards. Top edge of text dyed red. Notable is the slightly grey-green tint to the paper, designed to accentuate the illustrations by Carlotta Petrina. Also notable and quite unusual, is Petrina's illustration for the black linen-covered front cover, a kind of bas relief sculpture of the artist's drawing of Aeneas in the arms of the goddess, Venus, at the beginning of his journeys. Slip case issued with the volume is missing. O/w, only a slight sunning on the spine that has not damaged the gold lettering or title box. Boards and text are complete, clean and unmarked, no bumping, chipping or creasing. The Heritage Club monthly newsletter (Number 5H), issued with each volume to club members is laid-in. A very decent copy of this edition of one of the monuments of western literature.
