[From Preface] This work is primarily designed to be of practical guidance to those who - although not versed in Harmony - employ modulations with more or less satisfactory results, realizing at the same time that they are treading on unfamiliar and somewhat dangerous ground; and - sensitive to adverse criticism - often hesitate to express their thoughts with the freedom that would ofttimes help establish their individuality. To those familiar with and experienced in the principles of Harmony and Modulation, the methods explained and illustrated in this work will - it is hoped - be both interesting and helpful. With the assurance that will be developed by a thorough understanding of the theory and principles of Modulation, a greater freedom and variety of treatment - also the ability to combine Melody with the Modulations - will be the logical sequence. The part - treating of the preparation or making of a Musical Sketch, and the explanations - with illustrations - of the purpose and uses of the same - is a subject that has not heretofore received the attention that its importance would seem to require, and I feel assured, when summing up my own experience and that of others interested in the subject with whom I have come in contact, there is real need to explain that which has always been surrounded with a certain amount of mystery and doubt, viz: The Making Of A Musical Sketch and its uses.
