Moderate foxing and tanning to pages with heavier tanning to pastedowns and endpapers. Heavy tanning to text block edges and front hinge is cracked with exposed netting. Boards have visible rubbing and notable bumping to corners. Fair crushing to spine ends and heavy tanning to spine.

Cloth shows wear and soiling, internally end pages are foxed and the rear hinge is cracked. Blackledge was born in Bolton in 1886, the son of Joseph Blackledge (a warehouseman) and Sarah Ellen Blackledge (nee Banks). He was baptized at St. Matthew, Bolton, on 15 December. He grew up in Bolton along with his younger siblings Sarah Ann Blackledge (b. 1889) and Elsie Blackledge (b. 27 Feb 1896; d. 1979). Blackledge wrote a handful of books under his own byline, most notably Hell's Broth Militia, which concerned adventures with the Kurram militia on the north-west frontier.

A very uncommon book in very poor but readable condition. Copac has only four copies apart from one in The British Library.

[vii], 244pp. John Henry Harvey, ex-legionnaire 1384, was an Englishman in the French Foreign Legion who, along with Bennett Doty (an American) and two Germans, deserted the Legion in Syria in 1926. This is his account of his experiences in Morocco , Syria and Lebanon. The book is bound in the original orange-red cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling on the boards. The spine ends are bumped and the spine is faded. There is some patchy damp fading on the fore edge of the rear board and around the corners of the front board. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.
