The youngest daughter (full name Anna Cabot Lodge Quincy Waterston) of Boston Mayor and Harvard president Josiah Quincy dabbled in the arts, writing poems ("Verses," 1863), nonfiction ("Adelaide Phillipps: A Record," 1883) and Unitarian hymns; in 2003 her diary was published ("A Woman's Wit & Whimsy: The 1833 Diary of Anna Cabot Lodge Quincy"), chronicling the life of a 21-year-old aristocrat on the Harvard campus. Bold, attractive "With many pleasant memories / of our visit to your happy and / beautiful home I shall / always be your affectionate friend / Anna C.L. Waterston / Fort Washington, / 1862" on a 5" X 3¼" slip. Near fine. It's interesting that Fort Washington, 16 miles south of Washington, DC, was built in June of that year (1863) for the New York State Militia during the Gettysburg Campaign, so clearly this must have been penned there in the months immediately following its construction. A handsome, unusual war-date item.
