Alice Wellman grew up in Angola, Portuguese West Africa, where her mother developed mission schools and her father, a physician and surgeon, conducted clinics for the island tribes. On the many safaris made for her fathers medical research, Wellman covered much of central and southwestern Africa. All of her books from Putnam's have African themes.
