About this Item: Forgotten Books, United States, 2018. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Excerpt from The History of a Trade-Mark It may be that the fact that the trade-mark was first seen on the Korean ?ag diverted investigation, at the start, into rather unproductive channels. The symbol is not original, apparently, with the Koreans, but was appropriated by them from the Chinese. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. About this Item: Forgotten Books, United States, 2018. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Excerpt from Wonderland '96 Here has started, at 4 15 P. M. Every day for many years, from the Union Station at St. Paul, Minn, on the long journey to the Pacific Coast, the transcontinental train of the Northern Pacific Railroad. As it stands in the station waiting the hour of departure it well merits inspection. At its head is a huge ten-wheeled Baldwin locomotive. On each side of this machine there are three driving-wheels sixty two inches in diameter. The ordinary or standard locomotive has but two driving-wheels at each side. This number does not give enough grip on the rails to enable the engine to pull the heavy train easily and rapidly around curves and over heavy grades. An extra pair of driving-wheels is therefore necessary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. About this Item: Forgotten Books, United States, 2018. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Excerpt from Wonderland, 1902 Just eleven miles from the Union Station, St. Paul, lies the lake known among the Indians as the lake of the White Bear. It is St. Paul's summer resort, a beautiful sheet of water entirely free from rocks, shoals, or other obstructions, and furnishing an ideal yachting course. Its dimensions four miles long by two miles wide, covering some acres in extent - hardly convey an idea of its apparent size. Its shore line is very irregular, beautifully wooded and turfed, and with various summer resorts and club houses dotting it. Manitou Island is an aristocratic isle of royal cottages, curving drives, and old time trees. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. About this Item: Forgotten Books. Paperback. Condition: New. This item is printed on demand. 36 pages. Dimensions: 9.0in. x 6.0in. x 0.1in.Excerpt from The History of a Trade-MarkMany have wondered whether the peculiar design used a trade-mark by the Northern Pacific Railway Company was adopted by them in a haphazard manner, or whether a real significance attaches to it; whether it is simply an ingenious geometric device, or whether in its origin, meaning, and adoption there is hidden a story. It is not a creature of accident - in the sense referred to - and there is a tale and history back of it. It is not hard to relate its origin; it is easy to tell the story of its adoption; but when it comes to conveying to the general reader a clear idea of its original and ancient meaning, a somewhat difficult task confronts the relator, for reasons which will appear. The original symbol, of which the trade-mark is an adaptation, is Chinese in invention. The diagram itself was evolved in the eleventh century A. D. , but the ideas which it represents date back to more than 3, 000 years before the Christ child was cradled in the manger at Bethlehem. It is really, therefore, more than 5, 200 years old, and may, indeed, be much older. It is known as the Great Chinese Monad, or more commonly, perhaps, as the Diagram of the Great Extreme. Its Adoption. The design was discovered and adapted to its present use in 1893. About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. About this Item: Forgotten Books, United States, 2018. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Excerpt from Sketches of Wonderland: A Land of Rolling Plains, Boundless Grain Fields, Sculptured Lands, Alpine Lakes, Mining Camps, Indian Life, Dancing Rivers, Thriving Villages, Trackless Forests, Growing Cities, Lofty Mountains, Penetrated by the Northern Pacific Railroad Mounds and hills abound in various parts of the city, affording a landscape unrivaled. The Mississippi River winds through the city, and forms, with its white sandstone bluffs and tree-clad hills, a very important feature of this landscape. Minneapolis stands upon ground more level and regular than does its sister city. It is much better laid out, with broader streets, and has many fine parks. The Mississippi also cuts it in twain, but being utilized for its great ?our and saw mills, loses most of its scenic attraction. This is atoned for by Lakes Harriet and Calhoun, which form a resort frequented by large numbers of people, and as beautiful as popular. The railroad follows the east bank of the Mississippi, after leaving these cities, to Little Falls, a manufacturing place of good size. En route, St. Cloud is passed. Beyond Little Falls the road winds through a pine and tamarac region quite diverse from the open country along the river. About this Item: Forgotten Books, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from Wonderland 1903: Descriptive of the Country Contiguous to the Northern Pacific Railway Among La Salle s company was our priest and explorer, none other, indeed, than the well-known Father Louis Hennepin, a Fran ciscam priest of the Recollect order. A strange combination was the Franciscan, and to this day it is difficult. To gauge and determine the real character of the man. Upon one point all historians agree - he was a man of conspicuous and inordinate vanity and much given to exaggeration, particularly of his own dangers and exploits. One of La Salle s objects was the exploration of the Mississippi, or River Colbert, as it was then called, after a noted French statesman of that day.
