hardcover. Dust Jacket Condition: no DJ. 8vo 514pp. from Preface: "The vast and imposing structure of modern science is perhaps the greatest triumph of the human mind. But the story of its origin, its development and its achievements is one of the least known parts of history, and has hardly yet found its way into general literature. Historians treat of war, of politics, of economics; but of the growth of those activities which have revealed the individual atom and opened to our vision the depths of space, which have revolutionized philosophic thought and given us the means of advancing our material welfare to a level beyond the dreams of former ages, most of them tell us little or nothing." #01654. Seller: Alec R. Allenson, Inc., Westville, FL, U.S.A.
Hardcover. x, 149, [1] p.; 8 pl.; 22 cm. `The slow revival in Europe began in Byzantium and passed to Italy, while a separate movement appeared in northern countries. In the thirteenth century the works of Aristotle were rediscovered and translated into Latin, first from Arabic versions and then directly from the Greek. A second philosophic synthesis was put together by Albertus Magnus and St. Thomas Aquinas, and Christian doctrines were combined with Aristotelian science and philosophy in the great system of Scholasticism. Aristotle's modified Platonism was nearer a belief in the reality of individuals or "nominalism" than was Plato's theory that reality was only found in ideas or classes, and nominalism was a better philosophic background for the beginnings, if not for the modern depths of science, than Plato's idealistic realism. Most men of science talk nominalism without knowing it, as Monsieur Jourdain talked prose.' (p. 119 f.) VG orig. light green boards in blue dj. Edges & jacket lt. foxed.
