First edition. [i-iii], iv-vii, [viii-ix], 10-536 pages. Hardcover: H 21.75cm x L 13.75cm. Poor condition. Original full leather binding and original yellow-stained edges. Front board detached with worn corners; rear board and rear free endpaper only tenuously attached with text block remaining reasonably firm; bottom half of spine leather perished with underlying binding cords and quires exposed, spine's top half has dulled gilt tooling but with gilt stamped title "Universal Vocabular" missing the concluding "y." Original marbled front pastedown and marbled rear endpapers present; lacking front free endpaper; front flyleaf recto has old faded pencil inscription and mild brown wax pencil scribbling; ffep verso with pencil notes; extensive pencil notes on rear flyleaf and on free endpaper recto. Moisture staining and varied toning (particularly strong among pages 241-448) with occasional ink marks in margins. Morgan Bibliography of Ohio Imprints, 1796-1850 cites 10 copies of this 1831 first edition among U.S. institutions. A second edition was published in 1832. Should be re-backed and sold as is but an interesting dictionary and still fairly early Ohio imprint. Book now presented in trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which modestly enhances exterior appearance and shelf presence.
