The spine gilt is somewhat faded; that on the front board is bright. Wear at the corners and spine extremities. Somewhat shaken. Foxing to the endpapers and first & last couple of pages. There is a bit of light foxing scattered here & there, but is very minor. Else the pages are a bit age-toned, but clean. A couple of the plates have a few small foxed spots in the margins, but none on the Images. Else the plates are clean. Glassine protectors all present; all have ghost image transfer. Huge folio-size book bound in embossed forest-green cloth ornately decorated in gilt and black on front cover and spine. Gilt-covered page edges. Measures approx. 13" x 10 1/4". 84 text pages. Heavyweight paper. All 20 engravings are b/w on unpaginated plates protected with tissue. In VERY GOOD + condition. Exterior is very bright and clean with only slight wear to the spine ends and corner tips. Otherwise, almost no exterior wear with gilt bright, shiny and unworn. Pages and engraved plates are all bright and clean with no foxing, staining, creasing or tears, except two plates have a few small open tears at the blank fore edge. A few of the tissue protectors have small tears or creases. Book opens wide at a few points exposing the inner threading. Small, faint previous owner signature in pencil on title page. No other markings.

Does not include plates. A little thumbing. Small tear to title in vol. I. The American author Nathaniel Parker Willis worked with several notable American writers including Edgar Allan Poe and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow as well as writing the text to go along with Bartlett's prints. Although largely forgotten, he was the highest-paid magazine writer of his day. This set lacks Bartlett's illustrations, but does have the publisher's striking full leather gift binding. The gilt design depicts native people peering at a small group of settlers standing by their canoe.

Condition: fair. 2 volume hardcover set, in full green leather with gilt and blind-stamped decoration. Spine board is very rubbed and worn, chipped at crown and foot, but binding is tight and fully intact, on both volumes. Boards of both volumes are quite worn, particualrly edgeworn. Heavy bumping to board corners on both volumes, exposing cardboard. Prior owner's signature in ink in both volumes, multiple times in Vol 1. Short gift inscriptions in pencil, and bookplates of Henry Hamilton, illustrated with the Hamilton coat of arms, laid in on paste-down of each volume. Each volume is missing one illustration, and a tissue layer in Vol 1 has been torn out, and other illustrations have significant foxing or occasional staining. Text is foxed throughout with occasional staining, but still clear and readable. Marbled page block edges are worn and faded. Marbled endpapers in good condtiion, a little worn/browned. Ribbon bookmark missing from Vol 1. Overall, in a fair but well-loved condition.

Raised cords, gold lettering on the spines. Some mild edgewear to corners and hinges, as you'd expect, but everything still tightly bound and attractive. No dates on either the printed title pages or the engraved ones. 124 and 108 pages, with gilt page edges. The engravings, which are not numbered (120 of them) add to the bulk and heft of the set.
