Vol. III , 1869 - 1879 ( Published in 1878 ) .First Printing . Vol. IV , 1878 - 1886 , ( Published in 1886 ) . First Printing . Vol V , A Memoir of Robert C. winthrop , 1809 - 1894 , ( Published in 1897 ), by Robert C. winthrop , Jr . First Printing . Each of these volumes has the bookplate of the Connecticut Historical Society on the front pastedown acknowledging the gift of these books to the Society by Robert C. Winthrop , Jr . The boards and spines on these five books are perfectly matched in green cloth and gold graphics --beautiful bindings . I don't believe that Little , Brown could have matched them this well over the forty-five years from the publication of the first volume to the publication of the last one . It is very likely that Robert C. Winthrop , Jr. had these exquisite bindings done before he presented the books to the Society . These five volumes are in excellent codition . Other than the bookplates of the Society , there are no marks of any kind , exterior or interior , on the books . All of the bindings are tight . The gold gilt on the tops of the pages is still bright . The books appear to have been very little read . Winthrop had a long political career in Massachusetts and Washington . He served a number of years in the Massachusetts legislature and he served in both the United States Senate and House of Representatives . He was elected Speaker of the House . The indexes to the volumes read like a Who's Who of Nineteenth Century American politics . This is rich material for anyone interested in the the period leading up to the Civil war , the war years , and the decades of recovery .
